Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is ranked best in “Traceability of Clothing with Textile Seals” in a study conducted by Stiftung Warentest, a German product-testing organization. The test compared 5 different seals for clothing, with GOTS performing the best. GOTS is the only seal tested to offer complete transparency and traceability. Also complying with strict social and ecological criteria at all stages of production. This entails tracking the garment from the field to the finished product.
What is GOTS?
The Global Organic Textile Standard is a strict voluntary global standard for the entire post-harvest processing of apparel and home textiles. This includes spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, and manufacturing processes. These products are also made with certified organic fibers and compliance with the strict ecological and social criteria. Transaction certificates serve as shipping documents which prove that the garments are certified. Products may only be sold with a GOTS label if the entire supply chain process if the entire supply chain is certified and the necessary scope and transaction certificates have been obtained.
What does GOTS Certify?
It is possible to certify textile products, manufacturing activities, and chemical products for textile use. Textile products must contain at least seventy percent of natural fibers from organic farming. This includes fibers, yarns, fabrics, textile accessories, household linen, mattress, bedding and more. The standard also certifies manufacturing activities. GOTS requires that all manufacturing processes, such as dyeing or printing, are certified by operators who adopt management models and procedures in compliance with GOTS requirements. ICEA verifies the approval of chemicals that can be used in the textile distinguishment of GOTS products. The assessment of chemicals is based largely on the verification of toxicological and ecotoxicological characteristics. In order to guarantee consistent product assurance of GOTS certified products, independent on-site inspection is carried out annually.
How to get GOTS Certified?
The product certification process GOTS uses is divided into three main components. First, there is an initial assessment of the products and production. This is generally an assessment of the composition of products for which the certification is required. This also includes the natural origin of raw materials and the suitability of chemicals used. Next is the on-site inspection. This step is used to verify the effective compliance of products with the GOTS criteria and the correct organization and management of manufacturing processes and internal procedures that could compromise the conformity of the product itself. This inspection is also to verify the compliance of products with the defined requirements and compliance with relevant environmental and social criteria. Lastly, the issuance of the Certificate of Conformity. This is based on the information and data collected in the assessment and verification process.
